By 2030, energy consumption by data centers for artificial intelligence in Russia will increase by at least 2.5 times, from the current 1 GW to 2.5 GW.

Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications, and Mass Media and the government's analytical center presented this data at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, according to the Cabinet's website.

"Data centers play a crucial role in economic development. This is a strategic area that contributes to the growth of IT system performance and reliability," Alexander Novak emphasized.

To meet the future needs of data centers, the government has begun developing an energy supply strategy. Following the meeting, a working group led by the Ministry of Energy was established.

It was tasked with quickly exploring all possible options for meeting growing energy demand, including utilizing existing capacity and constructing new generation facilities in partnership with technology companies.

The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies could lead to a two- to three-fold increase in electricity consumption in the world's largest economic centers. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller made this forecast on October 20.

According to a recent report by the analytical firm Rystad Energy, global energy consumption will grow by more than a third over the next 10 years.
