Why GPUs fail: the role of design and operation

26 January 2026
Ruslan Kuznetsov, Ambassador of the Heat&Power exhibition, conducted an interview with Evgeny Zaitsev, head of Sigma Energy, on the causes of the failure of gas piston units.

The analysis is based on practical operational experience and service disassembly. The key conclusion is that most GPU problems are not related to the origin of the engine, but to errors at the design stage and further maintenance.

The interviews cover in detail:
  • Differences in the resource of Chinese GPUs.
  • Errors in the design of the container, ventilation and thermal circuits and their impact on the service life of the equipment.
  • The risks of the "new engine = good engine" approach.
  • The consequences of poor-quality maintenance.
  • The need to inspect and bulkhead the engines prior to commissioning.
  • The impact of the quality of service support and the level of responsibility of the contractor, regardless of the brand of the engine.
  • The principles of GPU operation according to the payment model per kWh and the distribution of technical and financial risks between the parties.

The conversation focuses on the real economics of projects and operational risks in gas generation.
