Why do you need a pyrometer and a thermal imager when servicing a GPU?

02 February 2026
When operating gas piston installations, temperature control is one of the key elements of technical diagnostics. We have repeatedly noted the value of exhaust gas temperature, but it is equally important to monitor the temperature parameters of other components of the GPU: cable lines and connections, oil, coolant, exhaust system elements.

Standard sensors remain the main source of temperature data. However, in practice, their capabilities are limited:
  • sensors are not installed at all control points;
  • They lose accuracy over time;
  • sensor failure may result in loss of motor protection.

Alternative instruments are a pyrometer and a thermal imager. The pyrometer allows you to quickly measure the temperature at a specific point, the thermal imager allows you to visualize the temperature distribution and quickly identify abnormal zones.

Practical application

As part of daily routine maintenance, it is recommended to monitor the temperature of:
  • the exhaust manifold opposite each cylinder;
  • oil pan;
  • elements of the cooling system;
  • power cables and cable connections.

Any deviation from the standard values requires immediate analysis and a search for the cause.

Typical risks identified by temperature monitoring:
  • loose cable connections overheat, which can lead to short circuits and fires;
  • An increase in coolant temperature causes overheating and engine damage;
  • overheating of the oil leads to its burnout (degradation), the formation of deposits and clogging of channels.

Monitoring the correctness of sensors

The engine protection systems directly depend on the readings of the oil, coolant and oil temperature sensors. Even partially incorrect data actually deprives the engine of protection. The pyrometer and thermal imager allow you to compare the actual temperature with the sensor readings and detect malfunctions in a timely manner.

Conclusion

Pyrometer and thermal imager are not auxiliary devices, but full — fledged diagnostic tools. Their regular use makes it possible to detect malfunctions at an early stage and increases the uptime of the GPU.

It is recommended to include temperature control using these devices in the daily maintenance schedule of the GPU.
